If you knew how long you’d live — would you change what you do today? Tomorrow? In this episode, we speak with people who have challenged stereotypes, overcome major obstacles and proven that when you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything.

</ br></ br>

Three Promises

One moment Carolyn and Chad Moor were celebrating their love. The next, he lay dying, the victim of a hit-and-run car accident. During their final moments, Carolyn made three promises that she’s spent many years and tears trying to keep. Hers is a story of Growing Bolder in the face of heartbreaking loss. See how she learned to live and even laugh again and how her story even caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey.

Enjoying Life’s Little Miracles

She’s not really an athlete. She’s a retired biologist who loves adventure. That’s why 96-year-old Mary Anne Cooper traveled from British Columbia to Arizona to compete in the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championships. Mary Anne isn’t trying to be a role model or set an example, but with every stroke, she’s doing just that. She even inspired her 70-year-old daughter to also compete at Nationals.

Free Throw King

Andy McGuffin is the best there is. Mr. Automatic. The Free Throw King once made 400 in a row. Bill Shafer goes one-on-one with Andy to learn the secrets to his success.

Plus, thoughts from Growing Bolder With… contributor Pat Williams, who wants to you redefine the meaning of “consequences,” and we feature PGA professional and YouTube superstar Don Trahan in our How Are You Growing Bolder? segment!

Sometimes life is all about how you look at it — as something to cherish, or something to get through? All of the people in this episode are striving to meet new goals every day, and we think they’ll inspire you to change your own view.

</ br>

Finding His Purpose Late in Life

Artist Robert Sutz is a messenger for beautiful people filled with horrific memories. Sutz, 82, is creating what he calls irrefutable evidence of one of the darkest chapters in human history — the Holocaust. He calls it proof for those who don’t believe and a painful reminder to those who might forget.

Life From the View of a Canoe

Rod Price was a successful businessman, but he wasn’t happy. Then he discovered his passion in the grueling endurance sport of Adventure Canoeing. Now, more than 200 wins later, he has rediscovered his zest for life, and at 51, he has never been happier.

The Crown Jewel

An unlikely corporate icon, Bruce Rossmeyer parlayed street smarts and a willingness to gamble into a major business empire. In a GB exclusive, we visited Rossmeyer shortly before his tragic death and found a man motivated not by money, but by fun.

Plus, thoughts from Growing Bolder With… contributor Rowdy Gaines, with advice on setting goals that you can actually reach, and we feature world traveler and birthday celebrator Jay Freeman in our How Are You Growing Bolder? segment!

What’s your story? Whether you’re inspired by music, art, sports or something else, we think you’re Growing Bolder. So we’re shining the spotlight on people who are proving it’s not about age; it’s about attitude.

</ br></ br>

Orleans: They’re Still Having Fun

Think you know music? Who sang “Still the One,” “Dance With Me” and “Love Takes Time?” Orleans was the band, but who was the singer? Leave it to Growing Bolder to introduce you to one of the most recognized voices but least-known names in music.

In for the Long Haul

Siphiwe Baleka is a one-of-a-kind Yale graduating, globetrotting, God-fearing, truck-driving, fast-swimming family man. And he’s got a new mission — to help long-haul truckers everywhere improve their health, fitness and quality of life.

Conversations of a Lifetime

We all have a tale to tell, and that’s the premise of NPR’s Story Corps. We take you inside an amped up Airstream that’s a one-of-a-kind time capsule and it’s helping people across the U.S. leave a priceless legacy for future generations.

Plus, thoughts from Growing Bolder With… contributor Dr. Dot Richardson, who says you need to believe in the gifts that God has given you, and we feature intergenerational artists Meg Mosely and her grandmother in our How Are You Growing Bolder? segment!

Growing Bolder could produce a pretty amazing awards show of our own. We have a great cast of characters (only their stories are real) and plenty of drama and comedy to fill a few spots! So, here are our nominees.

I know lots of people (maybe many of you!) live for awards season. The fashion, the awards, the gossip…

But I don’t see many movies or watch many TV shows, so I usually just keep a casual eye on the the big events and parties — enough for some good watercooler talk, you know!

It strikes me, though, that Growing Bolder could produce a pretty amazing awards show of our own. We have a great cast of characters (only their stories are real) and plenty of drama and comedy to fill a few spots!

So, here are my nominees.

Most Inspirational Character

Recapturing a Shattered Spirit

Challenges are nothing new to Martha Carswell — she’s a former pro basketball player and finished Ironman Kona. But when her bike was hit head on by a van, it shattered more than her body. See how she’s still learning to live again.

Jumpin’ Joe and the Joe Dome

Joe Johnston may be one of the greatest masters pole vaulters of all-time and this may be one of the greatest masters track stories of all-time. Where else are you going to be amazed, have a laugh and learn the secret to life?

Stand Up and Fight

We love to tell the stories of cancer survivors, people who stare death in the face, beat it, then go on to live rich, fulfilling lives. But it doesn’t always happen that way. Meet a woman who died trying to get access to a life-saving vaccine.

He Has No Legs but Still Stands Tall

Just a few years ago, Roderick Sewell was a homeless teenager with no legs who was failing school. Today, he’s a world-class athlete, attends college and he’s set his sights on a big goal — making the Paralympics team.

Most Improved Lifestyle

Gary’s InSAIN Lifestyle

Forget the cake — drop and give us 20! Or, if you’re like Gary Sain, drop and give us 1,200. We’re not crazy and neither is he, although this is quite the inSAIN challenge. Are you up for it?

The 75-Year-Old Bodybuilding Champion

Jim Shaffer was never athletic, but at the age of 54, he decided to stop smoking and start working out. Something totally unexpected happened — he liked it! How much? Well, now, at the age of 75, he is stronger and healthier than ever.

Best Performance by a Musician or Group

Childhood Dreams Lead to Dream Career

Are you anxious, willing and ready to follow your passion but not quite sure how to find it? In many cases the root of all passions can be traced back to one place — childhood. See how one woman rediscovered the dreams of her youth.

B-52s Frontman Attacked By Batbaby!

After 30 years and 20 million albums The B-52s are still flying high. The bombastic Fred Schneider helped take them there with mega-hits like “Love Shack.” His creative juices are still churning in his latest, way over-the-top project, The Superions.

Rick Springfield Revealed

More than 30 years after he shot to superstardom, Rick Springfield retains a nearly mesmerizing hold on legions of fans. Two of those fans were inspired by Rick himself to convince him to reveal and explain this phenomenon in a documentary.

Keep On Rocking

Meet the Bats, a popular Kentucky group that likes to rock but not on chairs. They prefer to rock the stage. This group of 50-somethings regularly sells out its gigs and always leaves the audience laughing.

Most Entertaining

Overnight Sensation, 50 Years in the Making

How do you become a YouTube viral sensation at the age of 68? You tell a really good story. Jeanne Robertson and her growing legion of fans prove that people over 50 are embracing the Internet and leveraging social media in rapidly growing numbers.

Meet the Hornman!

From a conch to a tuba, Bill Nemoyten plays them all. See how this pied piper uses his unique collection to delight audiences and spread his passion for music to all who will listen!

Best Costume

So She Thought She Could Dance

Like millions, Quin Bommelje is a big fan of the dance competition shows on TV. She convinced her husband to sign up for lessons with her, but now, the woman who couldn’t dance, is waltzing her way to the winner’s circle in top competitions.

What’s SUP?

We had to know what’s SUP after receiving an email that read, “In July 2010, at 46 years old, I took a BOLD move, quit my 19+ year safe and secure job with the Florida Lottery and started living my dream.” That got our attention. We had to know more.

Segments in this episode include:

One Lap at a Time

With luck, determination, great medical care, the support of family and friends and the benefits of the sport of swimming, Susan has fought to escape the deadly legacy of a supposed wonder drug turned nightmare.

Meet the Hornman!

Bill Nemoyten was a music educator for most of his life. So why would that change when he retired? Instead, he bought an RV, packed up his wife and his collection of 16 different types of horns and set out from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area on a never-ending mission to share his passion for horns with anyone who will listen. Now, he is known far and wide as… The Hornman!

Kay Mullally is not a typical student, but she does represent an entire generation of women who were told that college was not in the cards. After raising a family, Kay decided to take a step into the future — or, shall we say, onto a campus.

You can read the full announcement on WUCF-TV’s website or in this official news release, but here’s the short version: WUCF-TV, the brand new PBS station that operates from America’s second-largest university, is the presenting station for Growing Bolder TV, starting with Season 3.

That means that we will be even bigger and bolder in 2012 than we’ve ever been, and we’re working on some exciting projects with WUCF that will help us highlight YOU…the ordinary people living extraordinary lives.

And we’re already looking for stories to feature in Season 4 and beyond, so if you know of somebody we should feature (maybe as part of our new How Are You Growing Bolder segment?) please leave us a comment and let us know!

Oh, and remember — we’d love to connect with you on social media (and if you love us, you’ll love WUCF):

Need inspiration for your New Year's resolutions? Coming up in Season 3 of Growing Bolder TV, we're featuring some amazing men and women who resolve to be better and bolder every day. Here's a preview.

Admit it. Whether you believe in them or not, you’re making a few resolutions for 2012, right? It’s hard not to, when you have that blank calendar with so much room and time for improving your life.

And if you’re looking for inspiration, we have it! Coming up in Season 3 of Growing Bolder TV, we’re featuring some amazing men and women who resolve to be better and bolder every day.

Here’s a preview:

Episode 306

Make a Difference: From Mission Trips to Mission Statements

More and more Americans are taking a page from Paul Newman’s book and starting a social enterprise — a business you love as a means to helping others. After many mission trips, Jane Hursh felt obligated to share the blessings of her life. So she turned to a lifelong love — baking cookies. Now with her shortbread, biscotti and granola, Jane is using something sweet to change bitter circumstances.

Episode 310

Get Fit: What’s SUP?

We had to know what’s SUP after receiving an email that read, “Att 46 years old, I took a BOLD move, quit my 19+ year safe and secure job with the Florida Lottery and started living my dream.” That got our attention. We had to know more. We found a family living their dreams and helping others discover a new FUN way of exercising — at any age.

Episode 313

Pay it Forward: He Made Oprah’s Famous Face

His life was one of abuse and rejection. The more he suffered, the stronger his resolve. No one believed in him, until a chance meeting with a fledgling talk show host changed everything. Now, after 20 years as Oprah Winfrey’s personal makeup artist, Reggie Wells is set to soar.

Episode 313

Quit Bad Habits: Second Chance at Life

At age 68, Larry Pontius had a life expectancy counted in single-digit days. Even the smallest things reminded him of his own mortality — commercials for a football season he might never see; pictures of places he might never get to visit. Then came a life-changing call.

So what’s your resolution?

This year, we were determined to take an official Growing Bolder staff photo to celebrate the holidays and beyond. How did we do?

The Growing Bolder team is as much my family as my husband, my parents and my in-laws. Truth be told, I see my GB colleagues more than any of my “real” relatives!

But like most families, as the years have gone by, we’ve gotten lazy about having our pictures taken. We are always snapping shots in the office or on shoots, but never seem to take the time and pose as a group. And I really wanted to create our first staff holiday card.

So this year, I was determined to change it. I sent an email around, asking everyone to mark the date and bring their best Team GB spirit.

And bring it they did!

That’s the finished product (well, one of them…we have lots of fun photos to share!) and I couldn’t be happier.

Of course, since I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to get us together again, I made sure to get lots of pictures.

Some of my favorites:

And then — oh, I hope they forgive me for this! — I created a very special holiday message for our fans:

Hopefully this little family unit stays intact for many years to come!

Do you have a hard time getting the family together for pictures?

What are your holiday traditions? As the season (rapidly) approaches, our Executive Producer reflects on celebrations of years past and thinks of the future.

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone (anyone else still stuffed?) and now comes the seems-like-it-will-be-here-in-just-moments Hanukkah and Christmas celebrations.

I’ve been dragging my feet on putting up decorations. We live in Florida, so the weather seems too warm, the palm trees too tropical, for these December traditions to feel real. But unless I have a tree, some tinsel, stockings hung by the <del>fireplace</del> pool deck with care, I will never get in the spirit, so this week, I’m digging out all of my goodies and putting them on display.

And when I do, I’ll look back at celebrations of yore. The year my parents wrapped a $100 bill (big money for a 13-year-old!) in box after box, like one of those Russian nesting doll sets. Or the year that my brother and I got to hang out with Santa together.

I think of the rules my mom always enforced — stockings for ravaging immediately after waking up, but no presents until after breakfast.

I look back fondly at some of the memories my husband and I have started to make — our pink feather Christmas tree, for instance, or our annual walk through the neighborhood to look at decorations and light displays.

And I realize that for me, the holidays will always be about reflecting on how blessed I am…I have a job I love, a home, a family that supports my every move, friends that inspire me and hobbies that make me feel great.

I know that not everyone can say that this year, and my heart breaks a little when I think of what they’re going through.

So the best I can say is — from the bottom of my heart, I wish you a very happy holiday season.

What are some of your traditions?

You're never too old and it's never too late to pursue your passion, whether that's barefoot waterskiing, rocking it out on stage or righting a wrong.

This new season of Growing Bolder TV kicks off with some truly inspirational people — but if you asked them, they’d say they’re just ordinary folks trying to pursue extraordinary lives!

Segments in this episode include:

A Mom Who Walks on Water

As a teen, Karen Putz lost her hearing while barefoot water skiing. More than 25 years passed, but her desire to get back on her feet kept burning within. Some family members told her she was too old. But Karen had rediscovered her passion.

Keep on Rocking

Meet the Bats, a popular Kentucky group that regularly sells out its gigs and always leaves the audience laughing. See why they’re inspired to keep on rocking the stage, even if they still have day jobs.

This WASP Still Stings

Betty Wall Strohfus was one of a handful of female pilots in World War II. After the war, she thought that part of her life was over. She was in her 70s when she felt compelled to honor her fellow WASPs by telling her story. Now at 91, she’s more proud and passionate than ever, and she’s one of the feistiest people you’ll ever meet!

Plus, thoughts from Growing Bolder With… contributor Roger McGuinn on putting a “Beatle Beat” on your own life, and we feature Diane White in our How Are You Growing Bolder? segment!
